You\’ll already know all about the brilliance of blueberries, broccoli and salmon, but have you ever heard of hemp milk, Macqui berries and Kefir? They\’re just three of the newbies making the summer 2015 superfoods list, bursting through the mainstream and into our cupboards. Our experts reveal the best superfoods for weight loss, delicious superfood smoothies and even anti-ageing.
Best Superfood For Immune Boosting Power: MACQUI BERRY
Originating from Chile, the Macquiberry is one of the most antioxidant-rich foods. Buy in powder form from Whole Foods or fresh from specialist health stores and add to juices, smoothies and dessert. “This superfood contains anti-aging compounds and an abundance of vitamin C, calcium, iron and potassium, which are all fantastic for helping to ward off diseases and keep you healthy,” says nutritionist Marisa Peer.
Best Superfood for Digestion: KEFIR
Kim Kardashian’s favourite, apparently. The fermented milk drink from Eastern Europe is emerging as a Superfood. “It’s packed with protein, calcium, b vitamins, is low in fat and contains live ‘friendly’ bacteria,’ which is can contribute to a healthy gut and can boost the immune system,’ says Bridget Benelam, Senior Nutrition Scientist at the British Nutrition Foundation.\”
Best Superfood for Weight Loss: AMARANTH
Farewell quinoa, there’s a new super grain in town. “Native to Central America, amaranth contains more protein than other grains,” explains Bridget. “This means it’s likely to keep you feeling fuller for longer and this can really keep your calories intake down when you’re trying to lose weight. It’s also so high in fibre, which is great for beating the bloat.” Have it instead of rice or cous cous for a filling, nutritious dinner.
Best Superfood for De-Bloating: RAW GOURMET SPIRULINA
Unlike regular spirulina, the freshwater algae famous for it’s immune-boosting qualities, the raw version tastes better and is even more powerful. “It contains chlorophyll to help detoxify the body, keeping bloating at bay,” says nutritionist Julie Silver. “It’s also got all eight essential amino acids as well as digestible protein, which helps build muscle mass – great for fitness – and enables the body to burn more calories. And all-round great superfood.” Gourmet Spirulina Nips, Petals and Crunchies can be sprinkled onto any dish or desserts, or eaten in a dried fruit mix.”
Best Superfood for Dairy Intolerance: HEMP MILK
A creamy milk with a nutty flavour derived from the Cannabis sativa plant. Don’t worry, you’re not getting the THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) ‘drug’ part. Hemp producers use less than 0.3 percent THC. They blend seeds with water, then the mixture is filtered.“Hemp seeds are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, which can keep cholesterol and blood pressure in check,” says Peer. “If you have milk or allergies or are lactose intolerant, hemp is a great alternative.” Buy it from Ocado or health shops such as Holland & Barrett.
Best Superfood for Anti-Ageing: CHAGA MUSHROOMS
You might struggle to find the mushroom at your local Tesco but the powdered form or tonic is just as beneficial and available online or from health foods shops. “If you’re buying the tonic, look for a brand that has a low alcohol percentage – the higher preservative the lower quality of Chaga,” says founder of exploreraw.com, Stephanie Jeffs. “Chaga is packed with SOD (Superoxide Distomas), a potent anti-oxidant and a known ‘DNA-protector,’ to keep your body young.”
